NYS Highest Court Dismisses Attempt To Repeal Marriage Equality

Albany, New York— New York State Appellate Court today upheld Marriage Equality in New York State by dismissing the suit brought by New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, an anti-gay group that was created by out of state interest in an attempt to interfere with the civil rights of New York State residents.

The nuisance law suit contended that the States open meeting laws were violated in the process of passing the law through the New York State Legislature.

The court action comes a year after the laws passage and three weeks shy of the first anniversary of the actual first marriages of same sex couples in New York State.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reacted to the court action:

"Today the New York State Appellate Court, Fourth Department upheld New York's Marriage Equality Act, which ensures that marriage is available to all New York couples regardless of sexual orientation. This law was passed by both houses of the legislature and signed into law in June 2011. The court’s decision affirms that in our state, there is marriage equality for all, and with this decision New York continues to stand as a progressive leader for the nation."

The decision: 644Staff
