BUFFALO— The New Alt Performance Group is presenting Wading Through the Light and Shadows, a new play conceived by Buffalo's David Butler. The play is built upon his coming out as a gay man to his parents story that was previously explored in his 1996 short play, Coming Out In The Car.

Wading Through the Light and Shadows combines the creative talents of David Butler (Designer, Actor, Writer), David Kane (Composer, Musician and Sound Designer) with Amy Taravella (Dancer, Choreographer). Conceived by Butler and taken from his writing over the last 14 years it loosely profiles the life and relationships of a man as he travels through life. This fast-paced production will take audiences though a barrage of staged poetry and dance, shadow puppets, and light play -- breaking the normal boundaries of traditional theater. As Wading explores the emotions in topics such as love, loss, and codependency; it also finds beauty on a New York subway, in the memory of fishing with a grandfather, humor in a defunct Mars landing, and the emotional breakdown of married man past his tolerance for wholesale club shopping. A foundation of Wading Through the Light and Shadows will be Butler’s revised version of his short play Coming Out of The Car, his humorous real life “coming out to his parents” story that was first produced with BUA in 1996 and later in the Toronto Fringe Fest of 1997. Along with new writing, other material was gathered from the 2008 Infringement performance at The Alt of Wading for Answers, and Butler and Kane’s Hallwall’s production of No Plan B.

Wading features the performance talents of veteran actor Tim Newell, (who recently starred as Scrooge in the Alt’s production of A Christmas Twist) as well as Butler and Taravella. Returning also to the Alt stage are Michael Renna and Kristin Bentley who performed in the hit production of Rocky Horror at the ALT in the fall of 2009.
