Albany, NY •In a bipartisan vote of 102-33, the New York State Assembly voted on June 3 to end discrimination against transgender people in housing, employment, credit and other areas of everyday life. The legislation adds "gender expression and identity" to the state's Human Rights Laws.
This bill commonly referred to as The Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) seeks to further strengthen the laws that protect against gender based discrimination.
The bill has strong support from Governor Paterson, the Republican controlled Senate is unlikely to consider the measure.
Buffalo's Assemblymember Sam Hoyt spoke in favor of the bill on the floor of the Assembly. Hoyt stated "I am proud to be serving in the assembly and and to once again stand up for justice and equality." Hoyt stated that he was casting his vote in the affirmative in the name of the entire glbt community of Western New York, The City of Buffalo, but specifically for my dear friend Camille Hopkins. Hopkins is one of the leading transgendered activist in Buffalo and upstate New York.•Staff
