US House Passes Hate Crimes Bill

BUFFALO, NY •The United States House of Representatives has voted to pass a bill that would extend current Hate Crimes laws to include violent crimes committed based upon an individual or groups sexual orientation and/or gender expression.

The bill H.R.1913 passed the House with 249 voting yes and 175 voting nay. The bill now awaits a Senate vote. The Senate approved a similar measure in the previous Congressional session.

Western New York members of Congress Brian Higgins,(D) Buffalo, Louise Slaughter(D) Fairport and Eric Massa(D) Corning voted to pass the bill.

Representative Christopher Lee, the lone Republican Member of Congress from Western New York voted against no on H.R.1913 •Staff
