Obama to Sign Hate Crimes Act Wednesday

Washington D.C. —President Barack Obama will sign into law the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act sign the legislation and make remarks at 4:45 pm EST on Wednesday, October 28, 2009.

The new law will protect victims of crimes who are targeted because of sexual orientation or gender identity, which is an expansion of the federal hate crime law. The Hate Crimes Act is part of the larger National Defense Authorization Act.

The hate crime law will be the first time that a law has been enacted that would offer people protection based upon sexual orientation and gender identity. —Staff
