Buffalo Raises The Flag For Gay Pride

BUFFALO— Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown will raise the rainbow flag to mark the beginning of the Gay Pride weekend in Buffalo. A ceremony will be held Friday, June 5 at 11:30 a.m. at Niagara Square in front of City Hall. The gay pride flag will be raised by Mayor Brown and the 2009 Pride parade Grand Marshal, Madeline Davis, and will fly throughout the week of June 5-12 in honor of Buffalo’s annual Pride celebration. Pride celebrates the accomplishments of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender individuals. Gay Pride flags first flew over Niagara Square in 1996 when the square was at that time part of the parade route. That year was the first year that pride flags were placed on city light standards along the parade route in official celebration of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transexual people in Buffalo. —staff
