Roswell Park Cancer Institute Champions Diversity & LGBT People

Buffalo — Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) continues to be progressive regarding workplace Diversity. It was one of the first organizations in Western New York to offer employee benefits to same-sex domestic partners. Roswell Park has championed LGBT causes within the organization and the Western New York LGBT community.

In 2009, the Friends of RPCI's LGBT Community launched with 8 members. The Friends of RPCI's LGBT Community is an Employee Network and Resource Group for LGBT employees and straight allies. The group's mission is to promote Roswell Park as an open and inclusive environment in which LGBT employees are supported in all aspects of Roswell Park's culture, including advancement opportunities, mentoring, and networking. Today, the group has 55 members and we continue to welcome new members.

In the first 18 months, The Friends of RPCI's LGBT Community has been involved in the following activities:

• Exhibitor at the Buffalo Pride Celebration in 2010 and 2011

• Participated in Roswell Park's Annual Employee Appreciation Picnic in 2010 and 2011

• Collaborated with Roswell Park's Human Resources Department to document and publicize the benefits that are available to LGBT employees and their families

• On-going partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS) to educate people regarding the high risk of cancer within the LGBT community

• Created Pride Month displays in Roswell Park's cafeteria

• Hosted social events for Roswell Park's LGBT employees and allies

Diversity Executive.com acknowledged the power of employee resource groups to be the engines for diversity and inclusion initiatives within an organization. Senior Leaders rely on employee resource groups to transmit inclusive messages to the organization, gain commitment for programs and solicit support needed to execute plans.

Roswell Park has a commitment to diversity and inclusion for all of its employees. The Friends of RPCI's LGBT community will continue to educate the leadership and employees of Roswell Park about LGBT issues within the organization and surrounding community.
